Even a more comfortable, thinner gauge chain would probably be less prone to coming free of the guitar if it's secured properly, compared to a strap without any aftermarket locks/washers.
You could probably add a loose sleeve of fabric over the chain for padding around the shoulders.
Honestly, I hate guitar straps for most applications, so I might investigate with adding a chain to one day.
