Arthur killed the ignition, stepped out, and unlocked the heavy brass padlock holding the chain together.
The silence on the property hit him like a physical sensation—clean, quiet, and completely unmanaged.

In his head, the math was already running:

He reached out and touched the cool, poured-concrete wall. Arthur pulled a small spiral notebook and a stub of a pencil from his shirt pocket. He clicked on his small brass penlight and flipped to a fresh page.
At the top, he wrote a single heading: PHASE ONE: EXCLUSION.
Underneath, he began to itemize:
* Deepen cellar floor by 4 feet; reinforce with rebar and poured slab.
* Order 500-gallon diesel storage tank (discreet delivery).
* Install manual ham radio rig; disconnect main property line to the grid.
* Set up rainwater collection along the barn roof line.
He paused, the pencil hovering over the paper. From down the valley, the faint, rhythm of a train horn blew across the hills—distant, automated, carrying cargo to a city he had no intention of ever taking his family into again.
Arthur closed the notebook, slipped it into his back pocket, and walked back out into the fading daylight. He looked down at his hands—clean, un-tattooed, calloused from real work—and then out over his six acres of dry grass and oak trees.
