Most people who "play" only have a small army or just collect the figures and put them on a shelf.

>>106748Have you never played warhammer? It's more like an oldschool wargame. You use a ruler and a compass to move and rotate your units. Think of those games with all the little squares on a field representing units. That's what it's trying to be, but instead of little coloured squares you have little orc toys or whatever.
It isn't as cumbersome as you'd think.

>>106745The few videos I've seen of this shit were all extremely autistic. I think that video or a comment under it mentioned they barely even cover costs by winning tournaments between all the expenses such as the pieces themselves and travel and lodge. Is there something preventing people from making convincing 3D-printed pieces more cheaply and entering with those than buying official ones? VT and DT have fun gameplay, but otherwise Warhammer is too autistic and dorky for me. I tried a private server for Return of Reckoning a few years ago, but got bored fast.

>>106761A grid would constrain movement to 2 axises. Being able to move anywhere allows more tactical freedom and is ultimately simpler. What if I want to move on a diagonal, but can only walk 4 grid spaces? On a grid based system I'd be busting out the pythagorean theorem I guess but with warhammer you can just measure 4 inches and use a protractor to rotate 30 degrees or what have you.

>>106761>It's just crazy to me that things like the actual physical size of the figure is a factor in this game.I think that specifically is a holdover from earlier versions of the game that weren't taken quite as seriously. There's a rule for example in gorkamorka, a warhammer spinoff game, that states your truck can hold as many units as will physically fit inside it, and if you move the truck and a figure jiggles his way out then he falls out in the game too. It's pretty silly but it's all in good fun and provides some entertainment. I don't think warhammer lends well to tournaments because of heavily asymmetric armies and a background rooted in silly rule of fun style gameplay.

>>106764>A grid would constrain movement to 2 axises.Nah, you can have uniform Z-coordinates too. If you move five meters up it's the same as moving 5 meters to the right.
>What if I want to move on a diagonal, but can only walk 4 grid spaces? The side of a square is not the same distance as measuring a square's distance corner to corner, but for gameplay purposes we can pretend it is, or diagonal moves can cost 2 movement instead if that seems more appropriate. Obviously I don't know enough about the game to fully understand the implications. I don't know, maybe the radial movement and wacky measurements are good things and serve as an effective gate-keeping measure.
