Energy resources are renewable. Petroleum is renews by a high-pressure mineral chemical reaction, oil fields can be drained but over tens-of-thousands of years they will refill.
Dedicated campaigns to wipe out the rainforests and poison the algae in the ocean would cause an extinction event. Pump Industrial Revolution level smog into the air by all 8 billion people could cause actual problems. Extremely hard to do though.
If you really want to improve the world environment just reduce human population. That will fix the ecology extremely fast.
